As a class we read The Color Tree by Denise Minnerly.  It was about a boy who lived in a black and white world but discovered a special apple tree with apples that were the Primary Colors.  He used those apples to color his world.  The children then were given their own apples (primary color paint) and could create their own color world.  There were some really imaginative world that were panited.  They combined their colors to make new colors based on secondary colors (orange, green, and violet) for their "Color World".  Some of their creations are hanging on the walls at Paddock.
